Manual Handling - one of the greatest causes of workplace injury

Each year, thousands of workers are injured doing manual handling tasks that are unsafe.

What is manual handling? - Manual handling means using your body to exert force to handle, support or restrain any object, including people or animals.

It is not just lifting or carrying heavy objects; it includes: lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, lowering, throwing, carrying, packing, typing, assembling, cleaning, sorting and using tools.

The term is not limited to handling heavy objects – pruning plants, stacking items onto a shelf, helping a patient into a bath and even using a keyboard are all examples of manual handling.

Working too long and too hard - Fatigue Management

According to the Australian Work and Life Index 2008, work overload is a problem for Australian employees. More than half the employees who were surveyed for the index "strongly or somewhat agreed" that they had too much work to do for one person.

Long working hours were also a problem for employees. "Three quarters of those working long full-time hourse would like to work different hours, almost all of them less. Only a quarter of long-hours workers are within half a a day of their preferred hours," the index says.
